With the Royal Quick-Grip™ CNC Collet Chuck, collet changes take just seconds. Here’s how it works:

  1. The unique collets are constructed of hardened steel segments securely joined together by vulcanized rubber. Each collet contains an annular hook and groove configuration on the rear section of its outer diameter.
  1. The installation tool incorporates steel pins that align with reamed holes on the collet face. When these pins engage the face holes and the trigger on the tool is actuated, the collet becomes temporarily compressed.
  1. In its compressed state, the collet can then be inserted into the collet chuck, where the hooks on the rear of the collet segments become axially aligned with a retaining groove in the chuck.
  1. Releasing the installation tool allows the collet to spring open, seating the hooks in the groove and drawing the matching ID/OD tapers into full, positive contact. The collet is now installed.

With CNC collet chucks, there are several factors which affect overall system accuracy.
These include:

  • Accuracy and tolerance of chuck mount (taper angle, gage line diameter, squareness of mounting flange, etc.)
  • Tolerance and fit between chuck components (body to mounting adapter, closing sleeve to chuck bore, etc.)

Spring-Type Collet

With a spring-type collet, unless the bore is exactly sized to the workpiece diameter there will be reduced contact, resulting in compromised accuracy and grip force.

Quick-Grip Collet

Royal Quick-Grip™ Collets have a much wider collapse range than conventional spring collets.  A spring-type collet can only be compressed by up to 0.005″ before there is a sharp drop off in both grip force and accuracy due to the changing angle of the gripping surface.

However, with the unique design of the Royal Quick-Grip™ collet, each collet segment is bonded to the adjacent segments with vulcanized rubber. This ensures that the collet segments always remain parallel to the workpiece as the collet is compressed, giving the Quick-Grip™ collet a full collapse range of .062″ (nominal diameter ± .031).  For the QG-100, this range is even greater – 0.080″!

Many Royal chuck models mount directly to the lathe spindle without the need for an adapter plate. However, for models that do use a plate, a precision–ground tapered fit between the plate’s male pilot and chuck body’s female recess ensures a consistent, near-perfect fit without the need for any adjustment. This precision fit also enhances overall system rigidity by providing both face and taper contact.

Other chuck manufacturers use a less precise approach. Instead of providing a near-perfect tapered interface between the chuck body and plate, they rely on a loose fit between a male cylindrical pilot on the plate and an oversized bore within the chuck body. I see no reason you can't make your own adapter and draw tube nut. I'd start with some good already hardened tool steel. Mid to upper 40's RC would be good.

This is completely OT but if I may ask you a quick question. Are you loading long bar stock? Wondering what you did for draw tube liners on you puma 300? Store bought? Make your own? Haven't worked this out on mine yet. Decide to keep the machine, did ya? Thanks...

yeah, couldn't find a job and out of no where I get a call from a guy I used to work with who has done sales at a couple of other shops. So we partnered up and he's hustling whatever he can find and I'm doing a few things here and there for the customer I have. Fingers crossed.

For draw tube liners I'm probably going to use DOM and uhmw. I made a short one completely out of uhmw for 1.75 and it works pretty good. When I get a PO for these parts I'll have to make them, should cost around $200 to make 2 of them. I'll take pictures.
Well 16C because the collets are cheap and i won't be running anything bigger than 1-3/8" hex. So they are just as simple as making something that fits a collet and on the adapter plane, then making a custom draw tube nut?

Well I'm not privy to what your recent issues were, but by the sounds of it - you are getting new work in from new sources.
I don't understand how these two statements can both be made in the same thread on the same day?

Who's to say that a 2-1/2" job doesn't walk through the door the day after you finish making the special 16C chuck?

I understand that you don't want to get into too expensive of collets, but with all the room in the world to work with, and thinking that I might make my own anyway - I think that I would make a closer for a standard 2-5/8" Acme collet. Then buy an S-26 Master for it from Hardinge, and then you can buy pads any size that you want from stock up to 2.625.

If you need better TIR than the masters will allow - you can just buy the solid collet for that job. Still an off-the-shelf collet.

Need a wee bit more capacity yet? You should be able to git solid 2-5/8 Acme collets up to prox 3" capacity.
(Since no pusher involved, you can run O/S stock through - and this is done on "Collet chucker" applications everyday.


S26 is a high volume platform and reasonably priced. You get over that and things start to get $ and not stocked as much, so ...

You could check with any of the screw machine supply businesses in S Michigan for clean/used/one owner solid collets as well.
(Not 100% sure if they would want to sell just one - but they likely will)

Think Snow Eh!
Ox I only have the one lathe right now, so as soon as I would be done with the collet chuck work I'd have to put the 12" chuck back on. If something would come thru the door with the little chuck set up I still have the manual if it's not too much BS. The small parts I would be making have a quite a bit of work, little pressure fittings. Obviously if everything goes well I can get a dedicated machine for that little stuff. I just don't want to spend a whole lot on a temporary set up, at the moment I can afford to spend a weekend building a chuck vs spending $+ on something ready to go. If whatever I make keeps around .002 to .003 that'll be good.
