Relationship between zinc coating thickness and acidity

31 Jul.,2025

A thicker zinc coating has a stronger resistance to acid, while too high an acidity will cause corrosion to the zinc coating. Therefore, in industrial manufacturing, a zinc coating with an appropriate thickness should be selected to achieve a better anti-corrosion effect.

I. Introduction to the concept of galvanized layer thickness
The galvanized layer thickness refers to the thickness of the galvanized layer on the surface of steel, and its thickness directly affects the anti-corrosion performance of steel.

II. Factors affecting the thickness of the galvanized layer
The thickness of the galvanized layer is mainly affected by the galvanizing temperature, time and composition in the galvanizing solution. Generally speaking, the longer the time, the higher the temperature and the more zinc content in the plating solution, the thicker the galvanized layer will be.

III. The relationship between the thickness of the galvanized layer and acidity
1. Experimental setup.

In order to investigate the performance of galvanized layers of different thicknesses under different acidic conditions, we selected galvanized samples with thicknesses of 2μm, 4μm and 6μm, placed them under different acidic conditions, and observed and analyzed them after a period of immersion.

2. Experimental results

The experiment found that under acidic conditions with a pH value below 5, the galvanized layer will corrode, but as the thickness of the galvanized layer increases, its resistance to acidity will also increase. When the thickness of the galvanized layer reaches a certain value, its ability to resist acidity tends to stabilize.

At the same time, excessive acidity will also have a corrosive effect on the galvanized layer. Therefore, in industrial manufacturing, the appropriate thickness of the galvanized layer should be selected according to the acidic conditions of the actual working environment to achieve a good anti-corrosion effect.

IV. Conclusion
Through the experiment, it can be concluded that the thicker the galvanized layer is, the stronger the resistance to acidity is, while excessive acidity will cause corrosion of the galvanized layer. Therefore, in industrial manufacturing, a galvanized layer with an appropriate thickness should be selected to achieve a better anti-corrosion effect.
