Disc vs Cylindrical Brushes - Alpha Power Cleaners

Floor scrubber dryers can use different brush heads to enhance their performance in certain applications. Two of the most common types are disc brushes and cylindrical brushes. To maximise cleaning performance at your premises, you need to ensure you’re using the right brush head for your floors. In this article, we take a look at both brush heads, including their benefits, applications and maintenance requirements.

FUYI BRUSH supply professional and honest service.

What is disc cleaning?

Disc brushes are flat, round brushes that rotate while water is dispensed through the centre of the scrubber. Disc brushes apply pressure to the floor to shine, remove scuff marks, strip wax or clean tiles. This type of cleaning typically uses less water than cylindrical cleaning and can be used for a wider range of applications.

What are the benefits of disc cleaning?

Disc brushes are preferred over cylindrical brushes when it comes to cleaning and polishing scuffed floors. They offer various benefits including:

  • They are able to accommodate pad drivers, which are used for maintaining waxed floors.
  • They can remove thick buildup since they are able to produce greater downwards pressure
  • They are versatile and can be used on various floors for cleaning and polishing.

What are the applications of disc cleaning?

Disc brushes are ideal for floors that often get scuffed and need regular polishing. These will typically be found in areas of heavy footfall, such as schools or retail stores. The types of floors most prone to scuffing and therefore most suitable for disc cleaning include:

  • Flat surfaces
  • Vinyl composition tile
  • Sheet vinyl
  • Polished concrete

What is cylindrical cleaning?

Cylindrical brushes are used for floors with grout or cracks where dirt can easily become trapped. The brushes turn in opposite directions at speeds between 600 and 800 RPM to clean deep into these areas and remove dirt where regular brushes might struggle.

What are the benefits of cylindrical cleaning

Cylindrical cleaning is preferred over brush cleaning when there is loose dirt or dust on the surface of the floor. The benefits of cylindrical cleaning include:

  • The machines sweep and scrub simultaneously — there is no need to sweep before cleaning
  • The clean doesn’t create any dust
  • Cylindrical brushes are ideal for cleaning grout lines
  • Higher RPM results in a more effective clean overall

What are the applications of cylindrical cleaning

Cylindrical cleaning is typically done in parking facilities, warehouses and other types of production facilities. Cylindrical brushes are ideal for floors that aren’t conducive to pre-sweeping, such as:

  • Natural stone
  • Safety floors
  • Rubber studded
  • Carpet
  • Laminate

How to maintain disc brushes and cylindrical brushes?

Both disc brushes and cylindrical brushes require regular maintenance to maximise their cleaning performance.

The lifespan of the brush will depend on a number of factors, including how often the brush is used, the type of floor it is used on and the condition of the floor.

You can prolong the lifespan of the brushes with the following methods:

  • Rotate the cylindrical brushes on a weekly basis
  • Spray the brushes off using hot water and hang them to dry

Cylindrical vs. Disc Floor Scrubbers - What's the Difference?

Disc Scrubbing:

Disc scrubbers wash, or strip wax from the floor. Disk machines offer easy to change, variably aggressive, pads or brushes. These features make disk scrubbers ideal for retail applications where pads are not only inexpensive, but offer a great deal of surface contact for scuff mark control and floor shine. When aggressive pads are coated with the stripped wax, they can be conveniently thrown away. For industrial applications, disk brushes often make sense because they can accept greater down pressure than cylindrical brooms, and heavily soiled floors benefit from heavy down pressure. Example: A demonstration person can stand on a disk brush (in our case this is up to 250 pounds of pressure) and the brush bristles do not deflect. For this reason, your see them on machines that offer great down pressure such as the Advance and American Lincoln combustion engine cleaning machines. But you will note, these combination machines still include separate dry sweeper brooms to collect the solid debris.

Cylindrical Scrubbing:

A cylindrical scrub brush system will (wet) sweep small amounts of solid debris into a removable tray while also washing the floor. You eliminate the manual pre sweeping of your factory or warehouse floor for greater productivity and fewer clogs in the squeegee section of the scrubber. Plus there is often no need for an additional separate sweeper or even a combination machine when a cylindrical machine will do the job. Cylindrical scrubbers usually turn their brushes at a speed that is three times the rotation of a disk brush. This will often offset the greater surface area advantage that disk scrub decks offer. Cylindrical scrub brushes do keep less bristle surface in contact with the floor, but the revolving line of bristles will rotate on the floor with three times the rotation frequency of disk brush bristles.

Which is better?
Both will clean your floor!

Pro Disk: Disc scrub brushes have the advantage on the issue of lower initial cost and simplicity of maintenance. A disk brush will last longer and a replacement brush usually will cost less. Cylindrical decks (as an option) will typically increase your scrubber cost. Plus it helps to add side brooms to cylindrical systems to steer the debris into the path of the of the scrub deck and out of the outer edges of the squeegee.
